24/7 Heavy Vehicle Recovery and Heavy Haulage in Sydney
Heavy vehicle towing covers the recovery and relocation of commercial vehicles, plant and oversized loads that sit beyond the limits of a standard tow truck. Our team handles rigid trucks, articulated combinations, prime movers, buses, civil machinery and oversized freight using a purpose-built heavy-duty fleet.
Select Tilt Tray Group has spent twenty-seven years moving heavy commercial vehicles across Sydney and the wider NSW road network. Every job is matched to the correct equipment, restraint and route before we mobilise, and our dispatch line is staffed around the clock for breakdown work. Whether the job is an emergency recovery or a scheduled relocation, our heavy-duty towing is matched to the weight, dimensions and access of each vehicle.
For lighter loads and standard commercial vehicles, our team also covers truck towing across the same service footprint. And for larger and specialised loads, our heavy haulage guide explains how oversized and overweight transport works.
Our Heavy Vehicle Towing Process, Step by Step
Every heavy tow follows the same four-step process. The structure protects the asset, reduces operational downtime and keeps the movement compliant with NSW heavy vehicle regulations.
1. Load assessment
Our dispatch team confirms the vehicle make, model, laden weight, dimensions and the site access conditions at both ends of the job. Where access is constrained, a controller is sent ahead to assess clearance.
2. Equipment selection
Based on the assessment, our team allocates the right unit from the fleet, typically a heavy-duty tow truck, low-loader trailer, super tilt trailer or a prime mover for combinations.
3. Secure loading
Loading is carried out by controlled winching or self-loading under power, depending on the vehicle. Compliant restraints, chains and ratchet straps are applied and verified before the unit leaves the site.
4. Regulated transport
Movement is completed in line with NSW heavy vehicle regulations, including bridge and route restrictions, with permits arranged for oversized loads where applicable.
Heavy Towing & Heavy Haulage Capabilities
Our heavy fleet covers the full range of commercial recovery and planned haulage work across Sydney. Each unit pairs with a specific load profile, and the table below gives an indication of the weight bands typically handled by each.
Vehicles and loads we transport
- Rigid trucks: Specialist body-type trucks that exceed standard recovery limits are moved on a tilt tray or heavy-duty tilt tray.
- Prime movers and trailers: Recovered and transported together or separately using heavy-duty tow units, super tilt trailers, or coordinated combination movements, depending on configuration and damage.
- Buses and coaches: Route service, school and long-distance vehicles handled on super tilt and low loader trailers, including depot and kerb-side pick-up.
- Construction and civil equipment: Excavators, rollers and skid steers are transported on low-loader trailers under compliant restraint.
- Industrial machinery: Plant and production equipment moved between sites and yards, with options matched to weight, dimensions and ground clearance.
- Oversized load transport (subject to permits): Route, height, width and timing were assessed individually, with pilot vehicles arranged where required.
Fleet weight bands at a glance
| Fleet unit | Typical load profile | Approx. capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy-duty tow truck | Rigid trucks, prime mover recovery | Up to 24 tonnes laden weight |
| Super tilt trailer | Rigid trucks, buses, and mid-weight machinery | Up to 24 tonnes deck capacity |
| Low loader trailer | Plant, civil machinery, oversized loads | Higher combined weight with a permit |
| Prime mover combination | Multi-combination and planned heavy haulage | Combination assessed per job |
Note: All figures are indicative. Every job is assessed against vehicle weight, dimensions, ground clearance and site access before equipment is dispatched.

Industries We Work With Across Sydney
Our heavy towing fleet supports commercial customers across the industries that rely on heavy vehicles every day. The work runs from one-off breakdown recovery to standing arrangements with fleet operators who need a known dispatch team they can call at any hour.
Logistics and freight operators
Linehaul carriers, courier fleets and warehousing operators use our team for breakdown recovery and planned relocations of rigid trucks, prime movers and trailer combinations. Same-day response is the standard for active fleet jobs.
Construction and civil contractors
Site managers and operators rely on our low-loader trailers and super tilt trailers to move plants between projects. Our team coordinates with site access conditions, including bridge limits and load-restricted streets common in Sydney’s construction corridors.
Plant hire and machinery yards
Plant hire yards send machinery to customer sites and bring it back, sometimes on the same day. Our fleet covers excavators, rollers, skid steers and the larger civil units, with restraint matched to each machine. For specialist movements, our team also runs a dedicated machinery transport service.
Council and government
Local councils, transport authorities and emergency services use our team for heavy vehicle recovery, asset relocation and infrastructure works. We are familiar with public sector contracting requirements and site access protocols.
Roadside assistance and breakdown providers
Motor clubs and roadside operators refer heavy commercial jobs to our team where the load exceeds the capacity of a standard recovery operator. 24-hour dispatch keeps response times short, including overnight and public holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifies as heavy towing?
Heavy vehicle towing covers the recovery or transport of commercial vehicles, typically over 4.5 tonnes laden weight, including rigid trucks, prime movers, buses, construction plant and oversized loads. Anything beyond the limit of a standard tilt tray, or anything that needs a low loader, super tilt or prime mover combination, falls into the heavy category.
What is the difference between heavy towing and heavy haulage?
Heavy towing usually refers to the unplanned recovery or relocation of a broken-down or damaged heavy vehicle. Heavy haulage refers to the planned movement of large or oversized equipment on a low loader, super tilt or prime mover combination. Our team handles both, often for the same customer. Heavy-duty towing covers everything from emergency recovery through to scheduled heavy haulage.
Do you tow B-doubles, prime movers and articulated combinations?
Yes, subject to configuration, weight and site access. Prime movers can be moved on a super tilt trailer; trailers and B-double combinations are handled with high-capacity tow units, low loaders or coordinated movements. Every combination job is assessed before mobilisation.
What is the maximum weight you can tow?
Our heavy fleet handles loads up to 24 tonnes on a super tilt trailer, with higher combined weight movements coordinated on low loader trailers and prime mover combinations under permit. Capacity is matched to the job during the load assessment step.
Do you provide oversized load transport in NSW?
Yes, where load dimensions and permits allow. Our team arranges route, height, width and pilot requirements with the relevant authorities before the movement starts. Oversized loads are quoted individually.
How much does heavy vehicle towing cost in Sydney?
Pricing depends on vehicle weight, location, access conditions and whether the job is recovery or scheduled heavy haulage. Send the vehicle make, model, laden weight and pick-up and drop-off addresses for a written quote, or call our team on 02 9545 3464 for an indicative figure.
